Generally a triathlete will experience a foot injury that is known as plantar fasciitis will only occur in one foot. Men will typically suffer from plantar fasciitis more than women, which may be because of a heavier weight along with faster speeds that result in harder impact on the ground. It is unusual for a triathlete to develop bilateral plantar fasciitis as this is usually an arthritic condition.

For a triathlete that is suffering from the injury, the pain will often occur when they wake up as soon as they put the foot on the ground. The pain will be in the anterior medial tubercle located on the calcaneus and is usually localized to this region. There are some people that have pain that will prevent them from walking in the normal gait of heel to toe. At times, those less commonly, a person may experience pain in the Achilles tendon, forefoot or the subtalar joint.

When you have plantar fasciitis, walking on the foot will usually relieve the pain. However, when walking, standing, or training as a triathlete, the pain can come back. When training or during a competition, if you find yourself with an abnormal gait or stride or have pain when running or jumping, it is likely that you have injury and will need to go to the doctor to have it checked out.

Treatment

Treating plantar fasciitis can be a long process and if you are a triathlete it can be quite frustrating as well. Treatment should be undertaken with the help of a professional. Generally, recovery from plantar fasciitis can take anywhere from six weeks to six months to complete. If the conservative care does not help cure the pain, more aggressive measures may need to be taken which includes surgery.

The first step to treating plantar fasciitis as a triathlete will be to undergo physical therapy. Physical therapy will work on increasing the flexibility in the foot and ankle. In most cases physical therapy can lead to return of full function of the foot. As a triathlete with plantar fasciitis it is likely that you will have to forgo training and competing for a long period of time. Recovery time for this type of injury will vary from athlete to athlete and can range anywhere from just six weeks to up to six months.

Prevention

There are several steps that a triathlete can take in order to avoid plantar fasciitis. The first is to make sure that you warm up properly before each training session and event. Avoiding activities that cause pain is the next step in preventing this type of injury. In addition, having the proper shoes with good arch support is extremely important in preventing plantar fasciitis. Shoes are an important aspect for any triathlete and it is important to be properly fitted for a pair of athletic shoes that will meet all of your training needs. If you begin having this type of pain in your foot it is important to take the proper amount of time to recover and to do the proper strengthening exercises.
