Have you ever realized that you forgot to clean something for a long time, such as your refrigerator coils, only to discover one day they look really nasty? I myself have done this many times, and my solution to this problem is a house cleaning checklist. See how to make one for your home to keep everything clean.

There are several advantages to using a checklist. One of these is that it reminds you of cleaning tasks that you may otherwise forget in your everyday life. For example, besides the refrigerator coils I always seem to forget to clean the inside of my washing machine. Then, I am greeted one morning by a funky smell inside it, which seems to take even longer to clean out than the actual task would have taken if I did it more regularly. When I use a checklist I am reminded of this task so I don't forget.

Another advantage is that it helps remind you to clean regularly. Regular cleaning makes the task easier to do, meaning you actually save time by doing it more often. However, not everything needs to be cleaned daily or even weekly. There are plenty of tasks that need to be tackled monthly, seasonally, or just annually that we can easily forget about. A checklist helps you remember these tasks so they get done, even though they are infrequent, and keeps you from having to spend even longer on them later.

Finally, another advantage of a checklist is that it makes delegating tasks to other people in your household easy. You just show the checklist to them, and tell them (or ask, if you really want to be nice) which jobs are theirs. You can also see what you and others have accomplished by checking it off the list, which can be quite satisfying.

To make a checklist for your home all you need to do is take a blank piece of paper and divide it into sections for daily, weekly, monthly, seasonal, and annual projects. Walk around your home and think about what needs to be cleaned, and how often. Then, add these things to the list in the appropriate section. Finally, put the paper into a plastic page protector and you can use it over and over again. You can check off the tasks with a dry erase marker, and then erase the check marks when you need to start over.

Try making a house cleaning checklist today, and you too can experience the advantages of this organizational method for cleaning your home.
