Noetic sciences are explorations into the nature and potentials of consciousness utilizing multiple techniques of experience-including intuition, feeling, reason, and also the senses. Noetic sciences explore the "inner cosmos" from the mind (consciousness, soul, spirit) and how it relates towards the "outer cosmos" from the physical world. The science of noetics was a corner stone of the Dan Brown novel The hidden key.

Noetic scientists experiment with things like the efficacy of prayer, even though that prayer would more likely be known as "distance healing" in noetic terminology. Noetic science is really a multidisciplinary field that brings objective scientific tools and methods together with subjective inner understandings to study the full range of human experience. They're trying to measure points no longer regarded as immeasurable, like prayer, intuition or maybe even life after death, using the assist of evidence-based research and peer review.

Noetic science presents a scientific discipline of the human mind a great deal broader than psychology has to date. We know it as "noetic" following the Greek word for intuitive understanding. Nevertheless it might be inaccurate to speak of it as though it is totally new; it may be much better to refer to it as an emphasis within the human sciences. It is the second stage of a two-stage procedure.

The first stage, known as empirical scientific disciplines, is one of the most important evolutionary leaps in human knowledge. Its essence embodies a remarkable proposition, namely that understanding in the objective perceived globe ought to not be dependent on religious or traditional authority, nor the guarded property of an elite priesthood, but ought to be empirically dependent and publicly verifiable, open and free to all. Thus there's only scientific disciplines, the best framework of empirical relationships and conceptual versions currently obtainable, continuously tested in public by agreed-upon procedures.

The goal in the second stage is the creation of a similar body of knowledge, empirically based and publicly validated, concerning the realm of subjective encounter. Thus we begin the production of the growing body of established encounter about humanity's inner life, and particularly concerning the perennial wisdom of the superb religious traditions and gnostic groups.

This extension of scientific exploration, which we have termed noetic, differs in the materialistic scientific disciplines from the past in a number of methods. It's centrally concerned with subjective experience wherever materialistic scientific disciplines has dealt nearly entirely with objective, sensory encounter. In the direction of the reductionistic models of materialistic scientific disciplines it adds holistic models; to deterministic explanations of events it adds teleological, purpose-recognizing answers. Where materialistic technologies was largely value-inattentive, noetic science is centrally concerned with value issues. Materialistic technology has tended to test understanding by noting regardless of whether it leads in the direction of the ability to predict and control; while the consensus on validation of noetic sciences has not yet emerged, it seems clear that it will have more to do with knowing than predicting, and a lot a lot more with combining than control.

Whether it's implied by extrapolation from biofeedback training or psychic phenomena and the evidence for psychosomatic origins of illness, or regardless of whether arising from immediate intuitive encounter, the fundamental profound insight appears to be recognition that in some essential feeling "I am cause and creator." In some sense much a lot more basic than is implied in traditional psychology, our belief systems produce our reality.
