New page

= Wonderful City =

After arriving in Paris that October day, we boarded the metro. A young man with a camera around his neck and a large jacket sat down across from us on the metro line without saying a word. [http://wiki.opentuner3800.com/?title=User:urbanandersson0 ...] In starting a conversation, he mentioned that tonight was a “white night”, or ‘Nuit blanche’.

With my curiosity aroused, I asked about this ‘white night’. His face lit up as he explained how Parisians are encouraged to stay out all night with films, art exhibits, music performances and ‘happenings’ throughout the Paris. He described how this year, the white night celebrations would be in other cities across Europe as well, including Rome. His description was that of a phenomena sweeping the major cities of Europe. With that introduction, we eagerly looked forward to what would unfold on that ‘magic’ night. Nuit Blanche occurs the first week end in October, when the locals and artists have all returned to Paris.

People crowded the alleyways and sidewalks of Paris to enjoy the cool autumn weather. Music filled the streets and lights beckoned Parisians to venture forth into the night. All over the city crowds gathered at venue locations including [http://paris-guide.r76.se/sacre-coeur/ Sacre Cour], [http://paris-guide.r76.se/notre-dame/ Notre Dame], and the Grand Palais. The crowds continued pulsing through the city streets through the night.

The next day, Paris headlines reported that 1.3 million people participated in this 4th yearly Nuit blanche, making it a success. At Notre Dame, which was near where I lived, they projected an oversize picture of Christ the redeemer statue of Rio de Janeiro onto the front of the medieval cathedral rising almost 100 feet high. Across town was a concert consisting of 300 guitar players, at every venue was some unique spectacle for sight and sound.

Paris is a unique city with one of a kind charms, that are enhanced by events that bring a spotlight to its special status. The phenomena of Nuit blanche is one of those events that bring a special shine to this wonderful city on the banks of the River Seine. Nuit blanche is scheduled for the first Saturday in October. Other cities participating in Nuit blanche include Rome, Toronto, Brussels and Madrid.
