Umm... where's Malta?

In the med, just south of Sicily. 3 hours flight from Heathrow.

Malta is an archipelago of islands made up of Malta, Gozo and Comino. The main island, Malta, is 17 miles long. The capital is Valletta-are-you-better-are-you-well-well-well, often shortened to just Valletta.

The people who live in Malta (Maltesers) speak Maltese and English, and are mostly Roman Catholic; the currency is the euro.

So, who's coming to this thing?

I defer to the spreadsheet.

And... when will that be?

31st October - 7th November

But where to stay?

Sheesh, what's with all the questions?

The winning apartment:

Shamrock Apartments in Bugibba, Malta http://www.shamrockmalta.com From £ 110 for the week. These apartments have a swimming pool and located near beach, shop and bus station. Have also internet.

The runners up:

This place is only £440 a week and sleeps up to 9 people. It's in Gozo, which is the little island north of the main one. Will keep looking for other ones too though.

Wow this one is £318 a week and sleeps up to 9 people and is on the main island

More wow! This one is £159, sleeps up to 6 people but is tacky and ugly.

http://www.holidaylettings.co.uk/rentals/saint-paul-s-bay/83433

Ooh, this place is where all the night life is, and has wifi. £255. 6 people.

And how will we get there??

Bus from Neil's house.

Then fly to Malta and do some knitting

Then maybe get the bus from the airport to the apartment

Play for a bit

Bus back to Malta airport

Taxi booked in advance back to Neil's house?

What's a boy (or girl) to do in Malta, like, is there an itinerary?

There's no mad 'pack in as much as phyically possible' itinerary, I don't think it's that kind of holiday. Chill out, man! But here are some suggestions:

  • Go to the beach
  • Watch the girls (in bikinis) go by if you're a boy or a girl
  • Watch the boys (in bikinis) go by if you're a girl
  • Sample some of the fine Maltese cuisine
  • Mountain biking
  • Boozing
  • SCUBA diving
  • Going round forts
  • Trying to find traditional malteasers
  • Go to visit the local markets and make some delicious meals at home
  • Nerd Olympics - Malta stadium?
  • Wander round the old capital Mdina
  • Go to Saint Julians "where all the nightlife is. There are many clubs and parties as well as great places to eat and just chill and listen to live music." ~ Wikitravel

http://www.visitmalta.com/cycling

  • Cycling, great idea! I'm up for that (Matt)
  • Gatecrash a Halloween party
  • Smuggle in some fireworks and have a bonfire night
  • Party like it's 1999

Sampling some of the fine Maltese cuisine

National specialities:

  • Lampuki pie (fish pie).
  • Bragoli (beef olives).
  • Fenek (rabbit cooked in wine).
  • Ricotta sweets are popular.
  • Helwa tat-Tork (a sweet sugary mixture of crushed and whole almonds, offered to diners after a meal).

Tipping: 10 to 15% is expected in hotels and restaurants when not included in the bill.
