Grenoble Airport and Access to Ski Areas
Grenoble airport, despite being called the Capital of the Alps, is actually not a particularly convenient airport for skiers. The airports true name is Grenoble-Isere as it is in the Isere department of France. The airport is situated 40 km away from the city of Grenoble and not far from Lyon. It serves around half a million passengers a year and serves several charter flight companies such as EasyJet, RyanAir, FlyBe and Are Lingus.
Travellers can get one of the regular coaches into the centre of Grenoble, which takes around 30 minutes and from there get a coach to Lyon or Chambery and change there for a service to Moutiers for the Three Valleys ski resorts or Aime for La Plagne or Bourg St Maurice for Peisey-Vallandry and Les Arcs area. However, once in Moutiers or one of the other local towns, you still need to get up the mountain and it can be a further 30 minutes to an hour depending on the resort you are going to and cost 50 to 100 Euros for a taxi.
The most convenient and cost effective option is to book a direct transfer from Grenoble to Courchevel with one of the various airport transfer companies that operate from Grenoble airport.
If you do end up with time to kill in Grenoble, there is plenty to see and do. Grenoble hosted the Olympic Winter Games in 1968 and it was the first time that East and West Germany were allowed to compete as separate countries. It also brought coverage to the winter olympics and made stars out of the young competitors.
Grenoble is also famous for the Bastille high above the city and accessed by a cable car. There are restaurants at the top offering stunning views over the city. For more information on Grenoble airport and Grenoble city see Grenoble Airport Transfers
So if you are flying into Grenoble airport for your ski holiday, it is advised to reserve an Airport transfers from Grenoble to your ski resort accommodation and then you do not have to worry about train times, missing your connection and waiting around in the cold and wet.
