This diversity has given Gran Canaria the nickname of a "miniature continent".Gran Canaria enjoys a mild climate throughout the year, with an average air temperature of 21 C (70 F). Water temperature, however, is somewhat lower than average for these latitudes, due to a cool current flowing from the Gulf of Mexico. The island was conquered between 1478 and 1483 by the Spanish, led by Pedro de Vera, and fully colonized during the 1520s. Today it offers a multitude of tourist attractions.
Las Palmas has museums and historic buildings alongside its own beach, the Playa de las Canteras, with its nightclubs, cafs and shops. In contrast, in the rugged environs of Pico de las Nieves hikers can follow the trails of the Guanches' culture.
La Vegueta, the oldest district of Las Palmas, consists of a labyrinth of narrow streets, lined with historic houses with wooden balconies and beautiful patios. Equally charming are the old town squares, such as Plaza de Santo Domingo, with St Dominic Church dating from the early 18th century. Also noteworthy is the Baroque church of San Francisco de Borja (1644) formerly belonging to the Augustine monks and now serving as a law court.Right at the edge of the district are large market halls selling a variety of goods, including fruit, vegetables, fish, meat and local cheeses, as well as local handicrafts.
One of the biggest attractions of the Canary Islands, is the Museum that was opened in 1879. A refurbishment carried out in the mid-1980s has transformed it into a modern establishment. The collection includes such archaeological finds as statuettes of gods, pottery, jewellery and tools of the Guanches, as well as skulls, skeletons and mummies. The displays, which are diverse, also include models of historic houses. Among the star attractions are copies of the paintings discovered in Cueva Pintada de Gldar, as well as pintaderas - terracotta "stamps" used for printing geometric patterns on clothes.
You also should visit the building of the cathedral began in 1497 and took 400 years to complete. The lengthy gestation affected both its architectural form and interior furnishings. The Neo-Classical facade hides Gothic vaults resting on slender columns, altar retables,Baroque pulpits and sculptures by Jos Lujn Prez. The crypt contains the tomb of Jos de Viera y Clavijo,Canary traveller, historian of the Enlightenment period and the author of Noticias de la Historia General de Canarias. Another chapel is the resting place of diplomat Fernando de Len y Castillo. A lift in the south tower whisks visitors to the viewing terrace, which offers fine views of the town and harbour. 大田区 霊園
